Saguenay at a glance
Set majestically amid mountains and rivers, the city of Saguenay extends from Lac Kénogami to the Saguenay River and from Rivière aux Sables to Baie des Ha! Ha! The valley through which the Saguenay River runs is a fjord cutting a deep swath through the Laurentians and is bordered by legendary peaks and steep cliffs up to 400 meters high.
Saguenay was created in 2002 following the amalgamation of various towns and municipalities, including Chicoutimi, Jonquière, and La Baie. The word “Saguenay” is Innu for “where the water flows out”, “water flowing out” or “overflowing water.”
As the city’s financial and administrative center, the borough of Chicoutimi is the most highly populated area and was, until recently, the region’s biggest city. Founded in 1842 by Peter McLeod, the former city of Chicoutimi drew its name from an Innu phrase meaning “the end of the deep water” or “to where the water runs deep.” Most of Chicoutimi’s growth came in the earlier 20th century as the pulp and paper industry gained a foothold. With the depression of the 1930s its vocation changed, switching more to business and administration.
Saguenay is rich in culture, and its university contributes to this wealth. It is also known for its many research centers, including an aluminum research center, as well as industrial parks and its world class deepwater sea ports. Its economy has recently tended towards tertiary sector activity like services, communications, research, and education.
